Manufactured by VTI Inc. /USA, The Knee Dock is a well-built, low-cost, no-frill iPad kneeboard mount. It allows an iPad or iPad 2 to be securely strapped to the pilots leg. A soft silicon riser elevates the iPad to better viewing angle while ensuring the kneeboard does not slip sideways. The Knee Dock holds the iPad in portrait mode, and it cannot be physically rotated while strapped to the pilot’s leg. As a result, The Knee Dock may not be suitable for all flightdecks or Apps. However, it is an excellent value at an MSRP of $29.95 USD, and you can purchase the KneeDock for iPad 2 from Amazon.com.

Sky High Gear, Inc.’s Genesis Kneeboard for the iPad 2 is essentially an attractive iPad 2 portfolio case with straps. The case is made of ultra durable ballistic nylon material on the exterior and lined with brushed suede microfiber to protect iPad surfaces. The leg strap has a large loop to hold large pens or even a mini flashlight. Additional loops on the sides are can be used for additional writing utensils.

The front cover folds down, allowing the iPad to be propped up for a better viewing angle (at least when viewed in horizontal mode). When on the ground, the case converts into an iPad stand and has unlimited angle adjustment for viewing. Access to the sync port is available without removing or opening the case. The Genesis Kneeboard measures 9.75 X 7.50 X 1.00″ and weighs 12 oz and comes with a 1 year warranty.

While some customers are critical that the velcro straps are too short, this problem can easily be solved with a Velcro extension strap: take equal lengths of soft velcro (loops) and hard velcro (hooks), and stick the two pieces together. This shortcoming is more than made up for by the inclusion of an iPad-compatible stylus, which can alone can cost between $15 and $30 at most electronics retails.

While the Sky High Gear Genesis Kneeboard may not be the best iPad kneeboard available, with the included iPad-compatible pen, the $36.00 US retail price makes it an excellent value, even compared to non-aviation iPad cases.

The Sky High Gear Genesis Kneeboard is available through various distributors and online retailers, including Amazon.com.

Many operators have found kneeboards to the most cost-effective solution for securing iPad EFBs.

The following slides show five of the best iPad Kneeboard solutions available today.

While passengers some passengers may rest easier now knowing new FAA rules are in place to ensure pilots have a good night’s sleep before a flight, they might have trouble getting some shut-eye after they realize those rules don’t apply to the cargo carriers sharing the skies. This double-standard has commercial pilot unions up in arms. Here is a sampling of the frustration of the new FAA crew rest and duty rules from five of the biggest airline pilot unions:

“We strongly object to exempting cargo carriers from the new rules. A fatigued pilot is a fatigued pilot, whether their aircraft contains passengers or cargo. Passenger and cargo carriers both operate high-performance jet aircraft in the same congested airspace.”

- Captain Dave Bates, President, Allied Pilots Association (APA), representing pilots of American Airlines

“The release yesterday of the Federal Aviation Administration’s long-awaited science-based fatigue rule for flight and duty time was a political failure. The rule completely ignores the safety of cargo pilots and instead lets operators choose to ignore the safety improvements that will benefit pilots carrying passengers.”

- FedEx Master Executive Council (MEC), representing FedEx pilots for the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA)

“Giving air cargo carriers the choice to opt-in to new pilot rest rules makes as much sense as allowing truckers to ‘opt-out’ of drunk driving laws. To potentially allow fatigued cargo pilots to share the same skies with properly rested passenger pilots creates an unnecessary threat to public safety. We can do better.”
- Captain Robert Travis, President of the Independent Pilots Association, representing United Parcel Service (UPS) pilots

“The new rule demonstrates troubling inconsistencies in its application to cargo operations and, therefore, fails to meet the FAA’s stated goal of One Level of Safety. Congress directed the FAA to create new science-based flight and duty rules to appropriately establish one level of aviation safety to protect the public. Under intense pressure from the cargo industry lobby, the FAA has failed to carry out this basic congressional mandate.”

- Captain Mike Cleary, President, US Airline Pilots Association (USAPA), representing US Airways pilots.

While pilot unions have been quick to weigh in on the new duty rules, commercial airlines – who will have to figure out how to pay for the FAA’s new $297 million rule – have remained quite over the holidays.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced sweeping changes to crew rest requirements, an early Christmas present that will cost commercial operators and the aviation industry $297 million, according to FAA estimates. The new rules were based on recommendations developed during the FAA’s “Safety Call to Action” following the 2009 crash of Continental Connection / Colgan Air flight 3407 in Buffalo, NY suburb. The NTSB investigation following the crash identified pilot fatigue as a major contributor to the crash.

“This is a major safety achievement,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “We made a promise to the traveling public that we would do everything possible to make sure pilots are rested when they get in the cockpit. This new rule raises the safety bar to prevent fatigue.”

According to the FAA, the new rules incorporate the latest data and research into pilot fatigue. Based on this research, the FAA ruling establishes:

Variable duty time requirements based on when a pilot’s day starts.

Flight duty periods based on the number of segments the pilot flies during that duty period.

Flight time limits of eight or nine hours, depending on the start time of the pilot’s duty period.

10-hour minimum rest period, including an opportunity for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Cumulative flight duty and flight time limits based on weekly, 28-day and annual cycles.

At least 30 consecutive hours free from duty on a weekly basis.

Pilot confirmation of fitness for duty prior to each flight segment.

Under the rules, commercial operators may implement an alternative Fatigue Risk Management System to mitigate the risk of fatigue. This system must be data driven and actively monitored by the FAA.

“For decades, ALPA has fought for regulations that are based on modern science; apply equally to all types of airline operations, including domestic, international, and supplemental; and enable air carriers to establish Fatigue Risk Management Systems,” said Capt. Lee Moak, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA). “The new rule brings much-needed science-based improvements in flight and duty regulations.”

While the new rules do not apply to cargo carriers and other operators, the FAA encourages everyone to adopt the new rules on a voluntary basis.

“Every pilot has a personal responsibility to arrive at work fit for duty. This new rule gives pilots enough time to get the rest they really need to safely get passengers to their destinations,” said FAA Acting Administrator Huerta.

Despite the $297 million price tag, the FAA predicts the new rule will save the industry between $247- $470 million and substantially improve Safety for everyone.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that, effective immediately, general aviation and business aviation operators seeking to keep their aircraft’s registration number from being displayed over public data systems during flight no longer need to submit a Certified Security Concern to the FAA.

As a result of language in the fiscal year 2012 appropriations bill, the FAA is withdrawing its June 3, 2011 policy (76 Fed. Reg. 32,258-32,265) of requiring aircraft owners or operators to submit a Certified Security Concern in order to have their aircraft tail number blocked from view on the FAA’s Aircraft Situation Display to Industry (ASDI) or National Airspace System Status Information (NASSI).

“On behalf of our AOPA members, we thank the Members of Congress for their clear commitment to protecting the rights of individuals who fly their private aircraft in the national airspace from unwanted computer tracking,” said AOPA President and CEO Craig Fuller. “The action by Congress reaffirms the merits of the BARR program, which has operated effectively to protect the rights of our pilots.”

“This is an important win for aviation and for the privacy of all aviators,” said Rod Hightower, president and CEO of the Experimental Aircraft Association, which wrote a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the legal challenge from NBAA and AOPA. “Pilots and aircraft owners across this country should be proud of the work Congress has just completed in reinstating the BARR.”

“We are pleased that by including this language in an appropriations bill, members of the House and Senate have demonstrated their understanding that the Administration’s effort to curtail the BARR program paves the way for unwarranted invasions of the privacy of aircraft owners and operators, threatens competitiveness for companies and poses a potential security risk for people aboard business airplanes,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “The BARR is a congressionally enabled program, and it’s clear that congress doesn’t want the government to limit it.”

Owners and operators seeking to have their aircraft tail number blocked from these data feeds can now submit a blocking request directly to the FAA without stating a reason for the request.

The FAA has already begun receiving requests under the new appropriations language and is processing them.
This change will be reflected in the FAA’s interim policy which will be posted to the FAA Docket and published in the Federal Register as soon as possible. The FAA is developing a permanent policy that will be posted in the Federal Register for public comment early next year.

STATEMENT FROM RANDY BABBITT

“Today I submitted my resignation to Secretary Ray LaHood and it has been accepted. Serving as FAA Administrator has been an absolute honor and the highlight of my professional career. But I am unwilling to let anything cast a shadow on the outstanding work done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by my colleagues at the FAA. They run the finest and safest aviation system in the world and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to work alongside them. I am confident in their ability to successfully carry out all of the critical safety initiatives underway and the improvements that the FAA has planned. I also want to thank Secretary LaHood for his leadership and dedication to the safety of the traveling public.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In preparation for the upcoming winter storm season, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt are convening a Forum on Wednesday, November 30 to find better ways to manage aircraft diversions. Participants in the forum will review a series of proposed steps to improve travel for passengers who are diverted from their destination because of bad weather.

“During severe weather situations, we want to do everything we can to make sure passengers are flown to airports that are ready and prepared and where passengers can get off the plane quickly,” said Secretary LaHood.

The forum will take place in Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington, D.C. and will include air traffic controllers, pilots, aircraft dispatchers, airport operators, and officials from other government agencies and the aviation community.

The participants will discuss all of the factors that influence diversion decisions and airport capacity in bad weather situations, including the status of navigation equipment, aircraft parking and gate availability, Customs capacity, refueling and de-icing assets, jetway and air stair access and general ramp operations and security.

“We can’t control the weather, but we can improve the way diversions are handled,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.

The FAA is asking forum participants to bring ideas and best practices to the discussion. The FAA is proposing a new, web-based airport status tool that would present real-time information about each airport during a severe weather event to help airlines make fully informed decisions about where to divert. The FAA is also proposing including more airports in daily strategic planning conference calls during severe weather events to improve the information flow about which airports can accommodate diversions and would encourage airport contingency plans.

Shortly after Apple’s October 12, 2011 iOS 5 update for the iPad, Jeppesen Mobile TC and Mobile FliteDeck users began...

Shortly after Apple’s October 12, 2011 iOS 5 update for the iPad, Jeppesen Mobile TC and Mobile FliteDeck users began experiencing application crashes, loss of chart data, and other “minor anomalies”, according to the November 18, 2011 product notice posted on Jeppesen’s support website. Jeppesen’s solution to the problem is faily simple: close and restart the application.

Jeppesen isn’t the only developer who’s App can crash and burn under iOS 5. Hilton Software, LLC, developer of the popular WingX Pro7 App for iPad, recommends that users do not upgrade to iOS 5 on the iPhone or iPad because iOS 5 can delete critical data. According to Hilton Software’s notice: “This behavior is not a WingX Pro7 problem, it is an iOS 5 problem. iOS 5 can delete data from other apps, not just WingX Pro7.” For WingX users who do updagrade to iOS 5, the Hilton Software recommends keeping several gigabytes of memory free to prevent the “random deletion of files”.

ForeFlight was one of the first App developers to notice problems with the iOS 5 update, notifying their users via a detailed blog post just two days after Apple released iOS 5 to the public. “Every major iOS update since version 1 has required the use of a fine toothed comb to pull through every view and subsystem of ForeFlight Mobile to make sure it is compatible and stable,” ForeFlight stated in a June 7, 2011 post after Apple announced the iOS 5 Beta test. “This major iOS update – which is *enormous* – is no different.”

With tight budgets and tight timelines for delivering new versions or features, it’s easy for developers to ignore the ramifications of operating system updates and other core platform changes. But failing to adequately test for the latest operating system release can quickly result in anything from “minor anomalies” to the deletion of critical data. Apple attempts to minimize these types of issues by giving everyone participating Apple’s iOS Developer Program free access to operating system updates several months in advance. “We have been testing ForeFlight Mobile for the last few months using pre-release versions of iOS 5,” states the ForeFlight post. “You should not see any bugs in ForeFlight that are related to iOS 5.”

While ForeFlight indicates that iOS 5 isn’t as “buggy” as many developers have stated, it does acknowledge that the updated memory cleaning feature in iOS 5 could result in data deletion in any App if the user attempts to download a file larger than the available remaining space on the iPad.

While several Jeppesen Mobile TC and Mobile Flite Deck users reported data loss during the late October and early November revision cycles, Jeppesen’s November 18 release states: “Jeppesen does not store application data in a location where it can be deleted by Apple’s memory management agent, which is part of iOS 5. This issue has been raised in notices from other providers, but it does not affect Jeppesen applications.”

While Apple is currently working on an update to iOS 5 to a address battery life issues on iPads and iPhones, Jeppesen and WingX will likely have to resolve any other incompatibilities through their own App development efforts.

“The paperless flight deck represents the next generation of flying. The introduction of iPads ensures our pilots have essential and real-time information at their fingertips at all times throughout the flight.”
- Captain Fred Abbott, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, United Airlines.

United Continental Holding, Inc. (NYSE: UAL) plans to equip 11,000 crew members at United and Continental with iPads. United’s goal is to achieve a “paperless flight deck” by replacing paper charts and manuals with electronic versions of the same information. In addition to reducing the cases of pilot back injuries resulting from pilots lugging heavy flight bags through airports and hefting into aircraft, United expects the iPad-based electronic flight bags (EFBs) to increase safefty and efficiency by enabling crews faster access to charts and and other flight information.

Untied has selected Jeppesen’s Mobile Flight Deck, a more feature-rich follow-on to Jeppesen’s first iPad App, Jeppesen Mobile TC. The primary difference between these two Apps is Mobile Flight Deck’s georeferenced charts. It is unclear if United will take advantage these features as the FAA requires substantial airworthiness approvals to use own-ship position on EFBs used by certificated operators.

In addition to improving safety and operational efficiency, United is drawing attention to the “green” benefits of moving to an EFB platform for charts and other flight publications. According to United, the airline expects the weight reductions resulting from minimizing onboard paper to translate into 326,000 gallons of fuel not burned over a year. This would reduce the operator’s carbon footprint by 3,208 metric tons and prevent 1,900 from being cut down.

PaperlessCockpit.com’s iPad KABOOM! Community Project concluded successfully on July 15, 2011, when an iPad 2 passed a DO-160F Rapid Decompression test conducted by CascadeTek of Hillsboro, OR. The test was witnessed by representatives from FlightPrep.com, one of iPad KABOOM!’s premiere sponsors. Throughout the test, the iPad 2 ran FlightPrep’s iChart 2.0 App.

During the first stage of the test, iPad 2 running iChart 2.0 was placed in the altitude chamber and stabilized at an altitude of 8,000 ft for two hours. FlightPrep’s iChart 2.0 is designed to keep the iPad “awake”, and it remained operational.

During the next stage, the chamber simulated a rapid decompression event, causing the altitude to transition from 8,000 ft to 51,000 ft in under fifteen seconds. The iPad 2 continued to operate and exhibited no physical defects (i.e. flying shards of plastic and glass, or chemical fires resulting from catastrophic battery failure) for ten minutes. The chamber altitude was returned to ambient altitude, and the test concluded.

The iPad 2 survived the rapid decompression eve and continued to operate after the conclusion of the test.

While PaperlessCockpit.com failed to blow up an iPad, the iPad 2 Community Project is a success.

Essential services, such as air traffic control, will remain operation, but all airport improvement project contracts have been suspended and about 40,000 FAA employees have been furloughed.

“The FAA employees who will be furloughed perform critical work for our nation’s aviation system and our economy,” said FAA Administrator Babbitt. “These are real people with families who do not deserve to be put out of work during these tough economic times.”

Congress has issued twenty temporary re-authorizations since since the FAA’s authorization expired in 2007, avoiding a shutdown until now.

During a June 29 press conference on the current state of the economy, US President Barack Obama called for rolling...

During a June 29 press conference on the current state of the economy, US President Barack Obama called for rolling back tax incentives for aircraft owners and operators, the same tax incentives he championed last year in an effort to stimulate the economy.

“You’ll still be able to ride on your corporate jet; you’re just going to have to pay a little more,” said President Obama.

The tax incentives on the chopping block include “bonus depreciation”, which was introduced with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and renewed under the Small Business Jobs Act when signed into law by President Obama on September 27, 2010. Under bonus depreciation, new general aviation aircraft and major components (like engines and avionics) could be depreciated at an accelerated rate, significantly reducing the tax burden in the first year of ownership and reducing the overall tax burden over the life of the aircraft or component.

While President Obama’s speech characterized all corporate jet owners as “millionaires and billionaires”, the tax incentives he proposes eliminating benefit small and medium sized business who use aircraft (whether piston, turboprop or jet) as business tools that help them remain competitive in a struggling economy.

“[President Obama] just simply perpetuated a caricature of business aviation that is at odds with the reality of how this industry operates in the United States, ” stated National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) President Ed Bolen.

According to NBAA, eight-five percent of companies that use business aircraft are small and medium sized business.

“The president of the United States said we need to shorten depreciation schedules to generate jobs,” Bolen remarked. “The idea that we would lengthen the depreciation schedules for business aviation operators at a time when our economy is struggling is simply absurd.”

Based on General Aviation Manufacturing Association(GAMA) data, General Aviation contributes more than $150 billion annually to the US economy, employing about 1.2 million workers. Of the $7.9 billion worth of airplanes delivered in 2010, sixty-two percent of the value was tied to exports, making General Aviation one of the few US industries to provide a trade surplus for the country.

In response to President Obama’s negative comments, GAMA and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) sent a joint letter to the White House. “While such talk may appear to some as good politics, the reality is that it hurts one of the leading manufacturing and exporting industries in the United States,” state Gama President and CEO Peter J. Bunce and IAM International President R. Thomas Buffenbarger. “And it adds to the pain so many working families have endured.”

Community Project as a premier sponsor earlier this week. FlightPrep helped gain industry-wide attention for the project as an early supporte, and as one of the project’s leading sponsors, FlightPrep is donating an iPad2 to be used for DO-160 rapid decompression testing. During the test, the iPad will be operating using FlightPrep’s latest release of iChart 2.0.

“FlightPrep is proud to sponsor the iPad KABOOM! project with PaperlessCockpit.com. Since the iPad was announced, FlightPrep has been working hard to make our applications and services available on this revolutionary platform,” said Travis Cannon, FlightPrep’s Director of Engineering and Spokesperson. “Our goal is to help make electronic flight bag technology available to every pilot.”

The iPad2 donated by FlightPrep, along with a one year subscription to iChart 2.0 and a copy of the DO-160 decompression test certification, will be auctioned off at a charity event this fall.

“FlightPrep’s generous donation of the iPad2 hardware and its continued support of iPad KABOOM! is a major step forward to successful completion of PaperlessCockpit.com’s first Community Project”, said Curtis Oden, Managing Editor of PaperlessCockpit.com. “We hope the iPad KABOOM! project can serve as a future model for collaboration across the industry.”

Including the value of the donated iPad2 and contributions from donors from all around the world, the iPad KABOOM! Community Project has raised about seventy percent of the funds needed to complete the project.

“The iPad KABOOM! project will help the aviation community get even closer to a truly paperless cockpit,” said Cannon. “Please join us in supporting Paperless Cockpit and the iPad KABOOM! project.”

Washington, DC, May 28, 2011 – The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) strongly denounced a decision, announced by government officials late Friday afternoon, to push ahead with what has been dubbed a “Paparazzi Protection Rule” – a plan to virtually eliminate a decade-old “do not track” program for the operators of private aircraft.

“We are outraged at the government’s move,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “As we’ve said repeatedly, there can be no legitimate reason for a government agency to facilitate the monitoring of wholly private activity by anyone with an internet connection. This incomprehensible policy reversal gives anyone in the world – terrorist, criminal, tabloid stalker, business competitor – the equivalent of an internet homing device to track the movements of citizens and companies in real time.”
